Comet Arend-Roland (C/1956 R1)

A bright comet seen in 1957. At one stage it appeared to develop a "spike" pointing towards the Sun. This was a geometrical effect of viewing angle, caused by sunlight scattering off large dust particles strewn along its path, making them visible as the Earth passed through the plane of the comet's orbit.
